Hydrant and Notion

Choosing your tracker

Choose Notion when the project belongs inside the team’s knowledge base. Choose Hydrant when a small software team wants issue state to mean the same thing before anyone configures a database.

The useful difference starts with the basic object. In Notion, a database row is also a page. In Hydrant, an issue is an issue.

Let the work live with its context

Notion combines docs, decisions, meeting notes, forms and databases in one workspace. Its project system can present the same database as a table, board, timeline or chart. A specification can sit beside the tracker, while each task opens into a page with as much prose and embedded material as it needs.

This is not a toy task list. Notion has task databases, My tasks, sprints, sub-items and dependencies. A team can create its own properties, views and automations around the way it already works. If the central problem is joining knowledge and execution, Hydrant’s focused issue pages are the wrong replacement.

Notion is also well into agents. On Business and Enterprise plans, Custom Agents can run on schedules or workspace events, use explicitly granted pages and databases, take actions and leave activity history. External AI clients can read and write through Notion MCP. Those are different permission models: a Custom Agent has its own granted resources, while an MCP connection acts with the connecting user’s Notion permissions.

Keep state from becoming a local dialect

Hydrant gives up that composability for fixed software-delivery semantics. Status, refinement and blocking are separate facts. Ready requires explicit refinement. An unfinished blocking relationship keeps an issue out of Available to start. The browser and MCP tools read the same rules.

Teams can rename stages and add labels, projects and saved views, but they do not have to design a task database before an agent can understand the queue. The optional workflow pack adds preparation, review and release procedure; the product records the resulting state and evidence without pretending the procedure runs itself.

Hydrant does not replace a wiki, document editor or company knowledge search. Its plans also stop at three humans per workspace before a conversation with the operator. Notion fits the larger, document-shaped workspace. Hydrant fits the small delivery loop where a constrained issue model is the useful feature.
