Hydrant and Basecamp

Choosing your tracker

Basecamp fits when a project needs one shared room. Hydrant fits when a small software team wants the ticket itself to carry a stricter shape.

I have used Basecamp. Its appeal is still easy to explain: the work and the conversation can live together without assembling a small parliament of apps.

The room around the work

A Basecamp project can hold to-dos, message boards, chat, a calendar, card tables, files and automatic check-ins. Client mode can expose selected parts of that room while hiding unfinished work. That is useful for an agency, consultancy or internal team whose problem is scattered communication as much as task tracking.

Basecamp’s Card Tables can track bugs and software work through stages. It also has current agent access: an official CLI and Agent Skill let shell-capable agents work with projects, to-dos, cards, messages and schedules, while its API and SDKs support custom integrations. Basecamp’s pricing page currently labels full MCP support as coming soon, so the CLI and API are the concrete routes today.

Hydrant does not offer the room. There is no group chat, client portal, shared document cabinet or project calendar. If those are the missing pieces, choosing Hydrant creates more work.

The contract inside the ticket

Hydrant concentrates on a smaller problem. Status, refinement and blocking are separate facts. A ticket can sit in Backlog while it is clarified, become Ready only after refinement, and remain visibly blocked until its dependencies clear. Review stages and history keep the handoff legible to people and connected agents.

The product stores those facts and exposes them through its browser and MCP interface. The stricter preparation, review and release procedure comes from Hydrant’s workflow pack and the team’s decisions; installing a tracker does not make disciplined shipping automatic.

That narrower system suits an individual or very small engineering team that already has places to talk and store documents. Hydrant’s agent connection is bound to one workspace and inherits the person’s role, which keeps the ticket workflow close to the access boundary.

Choose Basecamp when the project needs a calm home for people, clients and communication. Choose Hydrant when that home already exists and software tickets need more explicit delivery state.

We post on X too. Mostly shipping, occasionally opinions. @usehydrant (opens in a new tab)
